The Ministry of Health honors 85 recoveries with the Opiate Substitution Therapy Program

The Ministry of Health and Population organized a celebration under the patronage of Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, to honor those who recovered from the opioid substitution therapy program, in the presence of Dr. Christina Albertin, the regional representative of the United Nations Office on Narcotic Drugs. 

Dr. Manen Abdel Maqsoud, Secretary General of the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, said that  85 recovered people who received treatment in (Airport, Abbasiya, and Khanka) hospitals, noting that the duration of treatment ranged between 9 months and two years. During the celebration, the recovered people shared their inspiring experiences, explaining how the program helped them change their lives for the better and achieve recovery after many failed attempts. It was crowned with success.

Dr. Manen Abdel-Maqsoud indicated that the opioid substitution treatment program achieved exceptional results, as it contributed to helping patients overcome to addiction and change their behaviors positively, which allowed them to return to their work and normal lives, as it depends on providing medication daily in harm reduction units in hospitals close to patients, while committing to regular treatment and rehabilitation sessions, noting that the program not only enhances patients’ lives, but also reduces Also the financial burden on the state by reducing the costs of patients’ stay in hospitals.

Abdel Maqsoud added that the opioid substitution treatment program is provided through 18 centers and hospitals distributed throughout the republic, where Treatment is provided free of charge to patients, in addition to psychological and social rehabilitation sessions under the supervision of medical teams qualified to the highest standards, stressing that the Ministry of Health attaches utmost importance to mental health and providing the necessary support to patients, and called on citizens to contact the hotline 16328 to obtain information about mental health services and addiction treatment or To submit complaints and psychological consultations.

The celebration was attended by Dr. Walid Kamal, Director of the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sharqawi, Head of the Central Administration for Education Affairs in the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector, and Dr. Osama Al-Mohammadi.
